News Article - Cell C frees the Mobile Web with aggressively priced HSPA packages
01 September 2010
Cell C today revealed it’s highly anticipated 21 Mbps HSPA+ data offering which is set to shake up the local mobile broadband market.
For years Cell C has failed to compete in the broadband market because it did not have a 3G/HSDPA network, and under previous CEOs, had made it clear that they will not invest in such a network as it "did not make financial sense".
However, Cell C's current CEO, Lars Reichelt, who was appointed in early 2009, has decided that the time is ripe for Cell C to take the fight to its competitors. He recently unveiled the company's new branding and strategy earlier this month, and it quickly became clear that he is set on taking the battle to Vodacom and MTN. Armed with a brand new 21 Mbps HSPA+ network Reichelt looks ready to shake up the mobile broadband market.
Cell C has launched two broadband offerings which are sure to shake up the South African mobile broadband market. The two offerings are:
- For R1,499 you will get a modem capable of speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 2GB of data per month over a 12 month period.
- For R2,999 you will get a modem capable of speeds of up to 21.6Mbps and 5GB of data per month over a 12 month period.
This means that the two products will effectively cost subscribers R63 per GB and R50 per GB respectively. This is far cheaper than Vodacom and MTN's current pricing which hovers at around R200 per GB, and in fact even manages to compete effectively with Telkom's fixed line ADSL prices.
